Ladbrook Takes on Its First Apprentice in 20 Years

Ladbrook Engineering has announced that it has taken on its first apprentice in twenty years. 17 years old Tom Hannant has joined Ladbrook on an Advanced Apprenticeship Scheme and will be attending day-release sessions at college whilst also working and receiving technical training within the Ladbrook factory at North Walsham.

Ladbrook Engineering has a history stretching back over 70 years and has recruited and trained many apprentice engineers in the past, but economic conditions in recent years have discourage the investment of the time and money required to provide an apprenticeship. More recently, Ladbrook has rebranded itself; and it has invested in new technologies and also explored new markets, resulting in a growing order book and increased profitability.

"Capable and experienced engineers are very difficult to find at the moment," said Paul Goodman, Manufacturing Director. "In order to compete in the world, we need highly skilled toolmakers and press setters; training our own seems to be the clearest way forward for us at this time. Taking on Tom as an apprentice is an exciting start."

Tom will attend EAGIT engineering college in Norwich on a day-release basis. EAGIT provides a wide range of training services to over 250 companies. It offers multi-level skills training which includes mechanical and electrical engineering, welding and fabrication, pneumatics and hydraulics, CNC, machining, fitting, milling and turning. Tom is already working with advanced CNC metal spinning technology during his daily work at Ladbrooks.

"We have also arranged a half-day technical training session each week for Tom, so that he can get a solid understanding of the equipment and the technologies we are using in the various manufacturing processes," said Paul Goodman. "Our depth of knowledge of manufacturing is one aspects that sets us apart from the competition. We are keen to share this with Tom, so that, at the end of his apprenticeship he will be a highly valued member of the Ladbrook engineering team."

Historically, Ladbrook's main business focus has been in the manufacture of both small scale and heavy duty pressed metal parts. For over 70 years, Ladbrook has been a leader in this field, manufacturing parts for household goods ranging from power showers to cookers, and from power stations to prestige sports cars.

"We have won several new and impressive clients over the past couple of years," said Paul Goodman. "I think manufacturers are now bringing work to us because they know that we understand the complexities of manufacturing high grade products in volume. They know that we have the knowledge, experience and capability to reliably deliver the parts they need. Our hope is that there will be more apprenticeships at Ladbrook starting over the coming years."
